2009 Counseling 100 Information
All new students are required to enroll in COUN 100:Orientation to College.*
Unlike other De Anza classes, the summer COUN 100 courses can only be registered for by downloading and printing the above COUN 100 Registration Form and then submitting to Admissions and Records. You can return the form either in person or by mail with your fee payment.
As counselors, we look forward to providing you the information you will need to be successful at De Anza. Your first step towards achieving your academic goals will be to enroll in COUN 100.
Critical Steps To Be Completed Before You Attend COUN 100
- Apply to De Anza at http://www.deanza.edu/my/
- Complete the 2009 Counseling 100 Registration Form and return to Admissions and Records with your fee payment. Please consult the Schedule of Classes for times or come into the Counseling and Advising Center in the SCS Building for more information.
- Take the English or ESL and Math Placement tests 2-3 weeks before the first class meeting.** Take the Chemistry Placement Test if you are planning to take Biology 6A or Chemistry 1A.Take the Biology 40A Placement Test if you are planning to take Biology 40A. Visit the Assessment department Website for more placement test information.
- Ask your high school or any other colleges attended to send De Anza a copy of your official transcripts.
- The Counseling Division will send you a confirmation email for the COUN 100 class you are enrolled in the week before your COUN 100 class begins. This email will include information on the classroom location, a map of De Anza and where to park.
- To verify your class date, time and location go to: http://www.deanza.edu/my/ and select the "Returning User" log-in button to log into the registration/class schedule system with your student ID and PIN (personal identification number).
Reasons to take COUN 100: Orientation to College
- It is required by the state of California that every student receive an orientation to college.
- Taking COUN 100 is where you will learn everything you will need to know to accomplish your academic goal whether you are working towards an AA degree or to transfer to a university.
- You will learn about general education (GE), major requirements and college degrees.
- You will learn how to transfer to 4 year colleges like the CSU and UC including how to get guaranteed admission to certain universities like UC Davis, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz.
- If you are undecided in your choice of major, you will learn about resources that can help you decide on a major.
- You will go on a campus tour and learn about important campus resources and services.
- You will have the chance to make a connection with your COUN 100 instructor who is a counselor and will assist you with your academic planning.
- You will have the opportunity to make connections with other students in your COUN 100 class.
- You will learn about De Anza student government and clubs from other students who are active on campus. You will hear from student volunteers advice that they think you should know to make your time at De Anza more enjoyable and productive.
- You will learn about Financial Aid options and how you can pay for college.
- You will learn how to select your classes each quarter by completing a Student Educational Plan.
* I do not need to take COUN 100 because:
- I have an AA/AS degree or higher or
- The courses I plan to take are for personal enrichment only
** Exceptions:
- You do not have to take an English placement test if you have completed a college course comparable to EWRT 1A. You must bring in verification that you have completed this course at another college.
- You do not have to take the placements tests if you have taken the Advanced Placement testing at your high school and have qualifying scores.
